Meet Tamay
Tamay, well, where to start! She is a superpower with the most wonderful values that come from living with the land and being connected to her ancestors and her community. She is Mien, living in the north of Vietnam in a village called Taphin near to Sapa. Since she was 8 years old, she has made embroidery, tiny silk stitches that teach patience, perseverance, dedication, and the final result is a sense of pride and connection to her contemporaries. Every year since she was 16, Tamay has made her own clothes covered in her villages embroidery. Tamay is now 50, she has 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Her husband, Va, makes traditional silver jewellery for the village and together with the rest of the family they all grow all their own food and still make their own clothes. They host tourists as a family, sharing their unique culture, and Tamay is now considered a real specialist in traditional textiles from the many minority groups who live in the region.
Tamay’s dream is that she can both help families in Taphin generate an income and continue their beautiful traditional textiles into the future. The textiles are about more than beauty, they are a way of life that is steady and strong. Together, we have built Tamay & Me with the hope of realising her dreams.
Tamay manages all the production of our jackets and other products whilst also sourcing vintage textiles to share with you.
She is always up for guests, If you want to visit Taphin and meet her, please reach out to us and we can connect you with her!
